Midterm Introduction
Why did you choose these blog entries?
I chose the blog entry on the book club thoughts because I thought it portrayed some close reading I had done and deeper thoughts about the book's set up as well as why it could be considered a piece of journalism. I chose the blog entry on my idea for the Talk of the Campus piece because I thought it accurately portrayed my thought process and creative idea for my second paper in the class.
Why did you choose these in class writings?
I chose the in class writing in response to chapters 20, 21, and 22 in our book because it showed that I really read the chapters and what I learned from reading them. It also applied to me and was informative to me because I had always loved writing fiction but have been writing nonfiction for our class. I also chose the in class writing on Zepp who we read about. I chose this because it showed that I paid attention to details in the writing and was actively doing close reading with the text at hand.
What revision did you do in your two papers?
For my profile piece I definitely added more in the end. I lost myself in Scarlet's story about her past and missed the point of why I chose to write about her. I regathered my thoughts and information together and switched the focus of the piece from her past to her present and how she is coping. For the Talk of the Campus piece I developed it further, made sure to focus on actual stories people have on "drunkorexics" to make it feel real and let their voices be heard loud and clear.
How did those revisions improve or not improve your papers?
I think they both helped improve my papers with further development, depth, and clarity on the topics of the papers.
How has your writing improved or not improved this semester?
My writing has improved during this semester because I've learned how to write journalism. I have never done that before and have always preferred writing creative fiction. I have a new found love for nonfiction writing because of this semester.
What do you want to say about yourself as a writer/reader so far this semester?
I've read this semester but am still not an avid reader. I tend to read very slowly in my head and re-read the same page over and over again until it seeps in and I can process it. By then, I usually give up unless I have to read it for school. I'm very proud I read all of Why New Orleans Matters. It dragged on in parts and got dry but I pushed myself. As a writer, I'm proud that I've learned how to write nonfiction journalistic essays and have actually enjoyed it.
